Andrology Services performed by California Cryobank:
Semen Analysis
A semen analysis is an evaluation of ejaculated semen to assess a man's fertility potential. Semen is a combination of sperm and seminal fluid that is secreted from accessory glands. The semen analysis is broken down into two parts:
- An analysis of volume, viscosity, and pH.
- A microscopic assessment of sperm concentration, percent motility, forward progression, morphology and other factors.
Sperm Washing
Semen is washed to separate the sperm from the accompanying seminal fluid prior to intrauterine insemination. The two types of washes performed at CCB are:
- Density Gradient Wash - sperm are separated from the accompanying seminal fluid on the basis of their motility through a density gradient media. The specimen is then washed again to remove residual media.
- Standard Wash - semen is rinsed in a salt buffered media and centrifuged to separate the sperm.
California Health and Safety Code require infectious disease screening of men who provide semen for artificial insemination. To protect the intended recipient and to comply with California law, California Cryobank requires screening for all male clients prior to sperm preparation. The law allows no exceptions for husbands or sexual partners of the recipient.
