I'm a 43 year old single woman. I'm a bit frustrated because my doctor keeps telling me that everything looks good but my age is very much against me. I know this is true but it's still depressing.
Today I did my second try of AI using IUI...without Clomid...my doctor doesn't think I need to go on Clomid since I'm ovulating and doing so at the same time every month.
My doctor is my regular gyno. Now I'm thinking I need to go to a fertility specialist as I am not getting any younger and not sure I'm taking advantage of all my options. I am not ready for IVF yet. What is the difference between seeing your gyno for this or seeing a fertility doctor...other than Med's and IVF?
Does anyone have any opinions on this?
I want to wish everyone good luck in there journey.

ladysfaire, Well it really depends on how long you have been trying. For us old gals (I'm 42) if you have been trying for 6 months, then it is time to move on to a Fertility Secialist.
Just to give you a comparison. My test have also all come back normal. I had 3 IUIs with my OB/GYN. He is rated as one of the top doctors in Seattle. None of them were enhanced by any drugs. And to be honest, they were very painful. I'm not 100% straight, and they had a heck of a time getting the cathater where it needed to be. And who knows where they deposited the goods. And I had no luck whatsoever.
This morning I had an IUI with a Fertility Specialist, who is also rated as one of the top doctors in Seattle. I took letrizol on days 3 - 7 and had a HCG trigger shot. He used and ultrasound to guide the cathater right to the top of my uterus and deposited it there. I barely felt it, and it was over 1,2,3.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the response.
I did my second day today at the fertility specialist's office since my OB's office isn't open on weekends.
It was a very different experience. First they checked the amount of sperm...which they didn't do at my OB's office. They did an ultrasound also to make sure that I was truly ovulating...which I was. I think it also helps that they do this so much and are truly tuned in to my needs...and focused on the same thing I am. They also didn't make me feel badly about my age.
I too had the pleasure of them moving stuff around to get it in the right place..but she said she got it where it needs to be...so now it's the wait and see game.
Wouldn't that be nice if we both got pregnant this time round.

ladysfaire,
I had my second IUI w/o drugs. I have talked to my OBY/GYN and she said everything is looking good. It is going to be day 5!! Here is my thought it cost almost 1000 a month 2 vials. Plus oby/gyn cost. They do the ultrasound to see the eggs. Here is where it gets tricky -my doc was out having a baby and so I went to another doc in her office and she said to me kinda under her breath.. oh you have one egg you are going to proably have to go to get on drugs..So IVF doc. Now that is going to cost 1500-2500 plus 1000 for sperm... yikes! I think that you should just go and get aggresive ]:o(

jennifersbaby,
Hey there,
Well there was an interesting turn right after I posted this question.
I went for my AI's and the first day fell on a Friday so I went to my Gyno. The second day fell on a Saturday and his office is closed. So he referred me to the fertility specialist that they refer people to when they are closed. He happens to be the one that I have heard many great things about...so I was pretty happy to see how things worked there.
I have to say...it is MUCH BETTER.
First of all...they know exactly what you are going though and care about you having a baby. They didn't once make me feel old and said there are so many options for me. They did an ultrasound to make sure I was ovulating and then did the AI. My OB didn't do the ultrasound and just wondered if I was really ovulating.
Anyway, I am going on and on...but I am convinced that I will go back to the specialist if I need to. But I am hoping that I got the big "P" this time. I only have a couple more days to wait...so we will see.
