Am I doing the right thing? 12/16/05 7:09 PM Hello Everyone, I am single, strait female and I decided to go through this process because I am aproaching 35 and I am not having any luck finding "true love'. So i am going through a sperm bank to have a child. In a way I feel liberated that I am doing this on my own, and on the other hand i am scared as hell! I do have a large family and they are all supporting my decision, that i a wonderful thing... My doctor put me on birth control for 3 weeks to regulate my cycle, so next month I will ovulate. I have polycyctic ovarian syndrome, so it will take me longer to get pregnant. I am very scared about all this and I hope I am doing the right thing. i have a HSG on Monday and then the doctor has me on glucophage. Anyone going through the same thing, please make me feel better about all this! i have always wanted children and this is the only way I know how. There is a 2 year waiting list for single mothers who want to adopt....I look forward to hearing someone's thoughts. Have a blessed holiday season everyone! |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 12/16/05 8:29 PM brown eyes, You are doing the right thing if it is what's in your heart (which it probably is). I too am a heterosexual female ttc. While I am a huge fan of the male species ):), I can't wait on Mr. Right in order to have a child. After all, we can find Mr. Right at any time. We can't always have children. I also believe that CCB is a wonderful sperm bank. |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 12/17/05 6:24 PM lemon, Thank you for your kind words, this is a really hard time right now wondering if I am makeing the right decision.... What are you going to tell people who ask you who the father is? Another question... how far along are you in your process? Thanks for thoughts, it helps to know I am not the only single female going through this! :D |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 12/26/05 1:09 PM brown eyes, I have had 5 insems; all unsuccessful. Tomorrow I am going to the RE's office to have a sonogram. I took a break from insems this month. As for what I'm going to tell people, not sure just yet. I am debating on whether or not to tell my siblings early on. Otherwise, I may wait until after the child is old enough to understand before telling others. At this point, only my mother and a close friend know that I am doing this. I may go for insem #6 next month. Hopefully, it will work out this time. |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 12/26/05 4:41 PM lemon, Thanks for your reply. Good luck at the doctor tomorrow, I will say a prayer for you. What kind of doctor are you going to? Is it a fertility doctor? I aggree not to tell a lot of people, I have told my mom and a few friends, I am afraid to tell a lot of people in case it does not work. I am going in for my first IUI this month... |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 12/26/05 5:51 PM brown eyes, The doc I am working with now is a fertility specialist. I used a midwife (big mistake) for the first 3 insems. When visiting the RE (who is familiar with the midwife), she mentioned that the midwife was not the most qualified individual to perform the insem. I suspect that my lack of success is due more to the quality of the procedure done. We shall see when I go for my test tomorrow. Thanks for the prayers as I definitely need them. I also pray that you will have the baby of your dreams sooner rather than later. |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 01/29/06 5:19 PM brown eyes, I am in the same boat as you. I am 41 (almost 42) and not involved in a relationship. Unfortunately, my life was chaotic these past few years, or I would have started this process sooner. I had blood work done, plus the HSG, and everything looks good. I hope to detect my LH surge this week and try IUI for the first time. I don't have a big family, and really can't count on them to offer much assistance, but hope that everything will work out fine anyway. My current employer is flexible with regard to LOA's and sick leave, so I should be able to figure it all out in the end. I would like to hear about your experiences, and think that single women need more info about this process. I've had to do tons of internet research, as the doctors here don't seem to have reading materials on the subject in their offices. Fortunately they did tell me about the HSG, which is a very important test to get. It shows your reproductive system and the shape of your uterus, which, if not "normal", could be an impediment to fertility. Stay in touch, and good luck! |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 02/18/06 8:56 AM msgoodbuns1, It is so encouraging to hear all of your stories...I am almost 38, I have a 12 yr old and have put off a second child while i got educated!! my husband has always wanted another child, but i wanted to finish my education...not its time!! we had a miscarriage in the summer of '04 and have not been able to conceive since then. Also, (to throw another kink in the chain) their is a hereiditary disease in my husbands family that we believe it is best to try and avoid using a donor....that is the main reason we are using donor sperm. I am looking to go for my 2nd IUI in April. the dr. has put me on birth control pills for a couple of months to rest my ovaries and to rest my anxieties too!! This is so exhausting!! but a bundle of joy is soooo worth it!! |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 02/26/06 9:50 AM seekinbaby, I am turning 39 tomorrow and I tested pos after my second IUI attempt. After reading so many posts over the last few months, I realize I am EXTREMELY lucky to have gotten pregnant so fast. I am praying that EVERYBODY enjoys the same good fortune. I know what it is to long for a baby for many years. This will be my first! |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 02/27/06 12:14 PM Felicia cant wait, Congrats!!! That is wonderful... i have a question, what method did you use to determine your most fertile day? With my first unsuccessful IUI, that did and ultrasound, gave me a shot to make me ovulate and then did two consecutive day inseminations... The dr. I am currently seeing is really big on using the Clear Blue predictor ($200) for the machine...never used it but looking forward to it during my April cycle. |

Re: Am I doing the right thing? 02/28/06 8:23 PM seekinbaby, I'm sure the Clearblue is wonderful, but I was really scrimping just to buy sperm! I relied on cervical fluid (thin, transparent), my BBT (dipped about a day before my pos OPK) and finally when I thought I was about to go pos, started tracking every 12 hours, which resulted in my going in a day earlier than I would have had I relied on the OPK. So, could have been all that, could have just been lucky....really not sure! If it had something to do with it, then I can only imagine that's what the CB will do for you- give you a more precise reading. That has to be good! Good Luck. Let us all know how it goes. |
