THE KEIRSEY TEMPERAMENT SORTER
California Cryobank (CCB) clients often request additional information about our donors. In response to these requests, we
now ask our donors to take the Keirsey Temperament Sorter (KTS). Clients may now purchase the results of this assessment to
assist in donor selection.
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing temperament. The test is used
for both self-understanding and understanding of others. The Keirsey Temperament Sorter was designed for use by non-professionals, and
is used by governmental agencies, businesses, religious organizations, colleges and universities nationwide.
California Cryobank, is working with Advisorteam.com, the official licensee of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter to offer
the test and comprehensive 10-page report to our clients.
Test Background
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is based on the theory of human type articulated by Carl Jung and turned into the first psychological
type instrument by Isabel Myers, with help from her mother, Katherine Briggs. The test was created by Dr. David W. Keirsey in 1978.
The Author
Dr. David W. Keirsey is a clinical psychologist who specializes in coaching people on how to get along better with each other. He worked
for California public schools for 20 years and followed by 11 years at Cal State University, training therapists and pathologists in
changing dysfunctional behavior in children and adults. He has written two books on temperament theory—Please Understand Me
(1978), of which 2 million copies have been sold, and the updated version, Please Understand Me II.
Temperament Theory
Temperament is a pre-disposition towards a particular configuration of habits. Temperament theory is a language to talk about commonalities
and differences between people. Temperament indicates a likelihood to act in a certain way. It is a set of inclinations set at birth.
Temperament differs from personality, the combination of temperament and environment.
Test Description
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is a 70 question test that takes about 10 - 15 minutes to complete. The test separates individuals into four
temperaments. The four temperaments are each measured on two letter scale:
- NT - Rationals
- NF - Idealists
- SJ - Guardians
- SP - Artisans
A person's character type is given as a 4-letter classification using one letter from each of the two letter
scales (for example ESTJ).
- Expressive (E) vs. Reserved (I)
- Observant (S) vs. Instrospective (N)
- Tough-Minded (T) vs. Friendly (F)
- Probing (P) vs. Scheduling (J)
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter has 16 character types. Each California Cryobank donor will have a unique result in their
placement on the four character type graphs.
Test Results
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter Test results consist of a 10-page report that outlines the temperament and character type of the donor. See a
sample 10-page report. Results of The Keirsey Temperament Sorter are available for selected CCB donors.
(Some retired donors may not have taken the test). Our online and printed catalogs indicate which donors have taken the test.
If interested, you may purchase the results of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter for the donors you
are considering. Please note that Keirsey Reports purchased online are not mailed, they must be accessed online. If you choose, you can
take the test and receive the 10-page report yourself ($14.95). For more
information on fees, visit our current fee schedule.
Please Read Before Purchasing or Taking the Test
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is a self-assessed questionnaire. The accuracy of the test will depend on the answers given by the individual
taking the questionnaire.
The Keirsey Temperament Sorter evaluates an individual's tendency to behave in a certain manner. It serves as a general outline
of a person. It is important to remember that although we may typically act in a certain way, everyone is capable of behaving in ways not common
to our strongest pre-disposition.
Many factors, in addition to temperament, make up an individual's personality. These factors include a person's character, his
or her age, gender, culture, background, and circumstances of life.
Please be aware that the results of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter for the donor you've selected, while interesting to read,
may not be a predictor of the temperament of your child. California Cryobank offers a number of tools (profiles, audio interviews, baby photos,
Keirsey Temperament Sorter reports, etc.) to assist clients in selecting a donor. We encourage clients to utilize a wide variety of tools to
assist in donor selection.
Any questions about the Keirsey Temperament Sorter can be addressed to our Client Services Representatives (x7100) or our Client
